Small backyards present a design challenge. Sure, a small backyard is better than no yard at all. However, you want to enjoy the same outdoor activities as someone with a spacious yard — you just have a concentrated area.
Part of the key to designing spaces for your backyard is the hardscaping and how it works within the overall landscaping. We have put together some ideas for designing hardscaping that complements a small backyard and your enjoyment.
Firepit Area
Consider adding a firepit to enjoy your backyard in the evenings or cold days. Consider having one part of the installation be permanent, either the firepit or the seating around it. This area of permanence will create a destination spot in your small backyard.
The firepit is the focal point of this space, so you could have the contractors build a permanent firepit in your designated space. Consider stacked stone for a rustic appearance or a grouted stone veneer for a more classic appeal. Either way, have the contractors extend the lip so you have some seating on the pit. You can incorporate some portable outdoor furniture to complete the seating area.
Bistro Patio
Laying down the flooring for a patio gives you the foundation for outdoor dining. Many activities can be done on a lawn, including grilling and entertaining. However, adding a table and chairs is tricky if you have grass or bare ground. It’s better to designate a space for them.
A bistro patio offers just enough hardscaping for a table and chairs. Because it’s so small, it complements a petite yard without taking up too much space. You often see a round patio because this shape leaves you some space for landscaping around the area. However, you could use any shape — leave enough space for the chairs to clear the table comfortably.
Since you’re not paving a large space, you can upgrade materials without impacting the budget. Consider using natural stone or manufactured pavers for this project. You could use a combination of the two, say using one as a border for the other. Such a design will make your patio stand out. Take your design inspiration from your home’s façade, trying to match colors and textures.
Raised Garden Beds
Although you may not have vast expanses of space for gardening, you can still enjoy this outdoor activity. Small raised planting beds in your backyard can create a beautiful picture.
You could line a fence with a raised bed or choose an unused portion of the yard. Next, settle on a shape. Square and rectangular are the popular shapes. However, don’t discount a charming round bed.
Stone and wall block are good material options here, too. Prepare your bed according to the instructions of your local garden shop, and then design an attractive flower arrangement to beautify your backyard.
